AND THE RAIN MY
DRINK, 1956 HAN SUYIN (RM 39.90)
Set in British
Malaya during the anti-communist
‘Emergency’
period, Han Suyin’s novel
skilfully recreates the
interplay involving the
Chinese terrorists, British
police, Malay Muslims
and assorted other groups in the polyglot society of
the peninsula. Credibly dealing with each of these
cultures, the story follows Ah Mei from her capture
with a grenade in her hand, through prison, and
finally into a car heading towards the Causeway
for a honeymoon in Singapore. This is a fictional
tale of our own Malaysia, it presents itself as an
extensively- researched novel about the Emergency
period in Malaysia. It draws you into the very shoes
of the protagonist and lives the life of the era. |
